Today I would like to talk with you about a specific subject which is closely related to the Russian Federation (and not only Russia) – corruption. As usual, it will not be an academic essay or scientific report. It will be an honest conversation and personal thoughts shared with you through a web page filled with my words.
What is corruption? At least once in a lifetime every single one of us has experienced the phenomenon of corruption. We are talking about either the Western/Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, Russia or America. I do not know your personal experience regarding this, but what I can say for sure is the fact that I did not met a single one person in my life who can say: “You know what? I have never ever experienced corruption on my own skin. I believe that everything is working right in my country”. Yes, a world without corruption sounds like a real utopia for me.
What is corruption? Today, we have a lot of definitions and academic debates regarding this subject. Academics and politicians are trying to define/redefine this notion in order to bring people’s attention on it. The truth is: I believe that we have to stop thinking about the definition of this concept. Do you know why? Because for us, simple working people who are not involved in the structure of political power, corruption is a REALITY.
As a person who was born and raised in Ukraine and continuing her studies in Romania, I have seen many actions of corruption. The same thing is in Russia as well. Believe me; there the situation is even worse. The biggest amount of social projects, educational bills and economic initiatives…all of this is called a government’s everyday routine, which has a substrate of corruption. Do you want to become a student? You have to pay. Do you want to get your driver license? You have to pay. Do you want to get a citizenship? You have to pay!
Yes, this is the reality of, at least Russian Federation and a few countries in the Eastern Europe. You know what I like the most? It is the notion of “lobby”. This sounds interesting to me. The procedure of lobby has to be understood as a process of promoting your personal interests inside of a company or institution. Yes, maybe you would say that lobby is practically a procedure of trading interests for interests. Nevertheless, who says that doing a favor for a favor is not corruption? The problem is that we used to think that corruption always involved money. Maybe you will say to me that today we live in a world where idea matters. Yes, it is truth. However, in order to make your idea to works you have first to get through bureaucracy, money laundry, and institutional inadequate behavior. Unbelievably – this is how everything works.
Maybe it does sounds pessimistic, maybe some of you are much more optimistic about this subject. However, at least for me, corruption is not only about the government, is not only about politicians. Corruption is a part of you too! Of course, it is very easy to pay something to get everything done easy and fast. Nevertheless, the most important element of any corruption scheme is YOU, as a citizen. Moreover, do you know why this machine is working so well today? This is because you accepted it and are helping it to develop and to become much stronger.
Dear reader, for the last time. What is corruption? Corruption is a part of a human nature. Corruption is a STATE OF MIND.
